Why Not Us
The post title is dedicated to all you Yankee fans out there. And before the pin-striped hate mail begins careening over here, let the record show that I am not a Red Sox fan per se, but certainly a fan of a good rallying cry.
Most of you don’t know the story, but “why not us” started as a post by Curt Schilling on the SOSH message boards during last year’s playoffs. I won’t recap what ultimately happened because you probably already know AND the fact that Jimmy Fallon was on the field really puts a damper on talking about it. The 10 or less summation is, it was one hell of a rallying cry.
Why in hell does Team Blogebrity bring it up? A simple reason really, because it’s a textbook example of what the Interweb can be capable of. To a great many last fall, it looked like blogging was even going to tip the presidential election. In the end, much like marketing budgets even in this day and age, the internet appeared to be trumped by good old Direct Marketing.
Blogging went on just fine and is now reaching a stage where marketers and offline celebrities are starting to rush into the game. Is this a good thing? Ultimately, we think it is, as it can only help the medium grow. But what WE here don’t want to see happen, is the crowding out of the bloggers who really do it best, the writers, dreamers, snarkologists and technovangelists (that’s 118 points on a scrabble board) that got this bird in the air to begin with.
Yes we started on the back of a contest and some of the outlets linking and calling us have blown our proverbial minds. We weren’t serious about the magazine until actual fucking legitimate interest appeared. Frankly, we’d want to do a print pub about online just because it registers about a 99.4 on the irony meter. But whatever this little thing becomes (and of course, odds are probably still better than 90% that this sucker goes the way of the dodo), its going to be dedicated to making sure blogging continues to grow…and that the stars of the show are the ones who started it all, not someone plugging their crap show on a friendster pseudo-blog. Blogebrity stands as a rallying cry in this crossroads.
We sure as hell didn’t invent the caste system, we’re just starting to write it down. And by no means do we have it right yet, but we’re getting slightly better at it everyday with the help of all of you. Keep up the yelling, and we’ll keep the light on.
