Gawker co-opted for serious art; Coen, Oxfeld demand “return to shallowness”

Oh grand. Someone turned Gawker into art. Twice.

Jeanette Doyle’s and then I place my face against the glass will run at the Broadstone Gallery between Saturday 10th and Thursday 22nd December and then from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 14th January. The exhibition features a series of oil paint/ digital print composites called the Gawker Stalker series. Doyle sites herself at the location of sightings of famous people in New York as they appear on www.gawker.com. She takes a paparazzi-style photograph, which is printed on canvas, and then overpaints the image of herself. Another series, called St Patrick’s Day Parade, New York 2005, consists of overpainted digital prints, also based on text from the Gawker website. Exhibited alongside these two series of works will be four notebooks containing sketches with more than 200 drawings.

The rough draft went, “There will be an exhibition exploiting a leading gossip site. While you’re there, leaf through the artist’s half-assed portfolio.”
