the Perfect [Shit] Storm
BJake’s at it again! And God bless him for it…otherwise, I woulda resorted to posting some high concept piece like where do blogs go when they die or why do people put bandanas on their dogs.
Anyhow…..
A SHIT STORM’S A BREWIN’ and our favorite anti-hero sits supremely on his throne of poo, casting down golden turdlettes upon his blogging colleagues. But, as witnessed by the growing number of fights in various blog’s comments sections, the blogging community has had enough of his crap.
On Wednesday, we relayed the brewing boy fight betwixt BVan and Bjake, in the comments section of this Gothamist post. However, it evolved, deliciously before our very eyes, into a sloppily shat out revelation that only a handful of Gothamist’s writers are paid, and the rest can suck on it (and read about how hard and deeply they were shafted in the comments section of their own blog).
Whether or not Gothamist pays its writers is not directly related to its (in)ability to report (versus relay) information. Paid staff or no, a blog, site, online publication, whateverthefuckyouwanttocallitsoyoucansleepatnight loses its integrity when helmed by a childish brat who seemingly spends the bulk of his day, not securing more ad revenue so that he can actually pay ALL of his staff in cash (not promises) like a good little publisher should, but rather trash talking other blog networks, picking fights, insulting industry colleagues, and generally not practicing good cyber-citizenry.
To wit/please tell me what the fuck is this all about:
1. PSFK relays gossip that Gothamist’s writers may do well to bolt to other networks, specifically to Erati.
2. Scroll down to the comments section to find Cowboy, of Erati, musing, “Why not if we pay better and reward our writers. It only makes sense to me.”
3. King Poo BJake craps out “That’s total bullshit– spread by the Cowboy, who’s looking for people to join his ill-thought-out “Erati” network (worst name ever?)… We’ve had no one quit in the last month”
What? Now you’re insulting the name? Wait…..whaaaaat?
“…if Erati is still around in a year (word on the street is that it’s already failing– and I didn’t just hear that from Scrivs– check out some of the “blogs” they’ve launched and count the posts they’ve actually gotten up– it’s a joke), we’ll see how they are doing. Maybe then he’ll have something to back up all this trash talking he’s been doing.”
4. Heather from [decentcontent] chimes in:
“i’m sure Joe DeSalazar, who happened to create over seventy recipes - unpaid - for gothamist is going to feel all warm and fuzzy inside when he finds out he’s considered a “no-one” who quit within the last month to come and write for us over at [decentcontent].”
5. Quick, like lightening, BJakes’s comeback: “i don’t see joe writing for you, heather. why would he? you guys have no readership, don’t pay, and only update once or twice a day, and then it’s usually a lists of links. the most interesting post you guys have run since you’ve opened was the one talking smack about gothamist.”
6. Heather, like a cat with cream: “How ironic that you say that: http://decentcontent.com/index.php/decenttaste/by-joe/decent-dinner-eggplant-nutmeg-risotto-parmesan-crisp/…Believe it or not, I have a lot of respect for what you’ve built…Our readership is growing slowly and steadily, and the caliber of talent we have on board already illustrates that we want to go further than rehash outdated crap like Gothamist.”
Well, wouldn’t that be the final wipe, so to speak?
7. Duh, no. From BJake: “”rehash outdated crap like Gothamist”? yup– seems like you’ve got a lot of respect for us. anyway, this is pointless arguing– we’re going to do amazing things this year at gothamist– and that’s the only thing that counts.”
Well, that and poo-pooing on everyone else’s parade. Nice going.
Full discloser: Angelina Williams is a contracted writer with the Erati Network and contributes weekly articles to [decentcontent]. Additionally, she has a disturbingly poor sense of humor and a penchant for all things vulgar.

The best part of this is we are bootstrapped Cowboy Style so Jake Dobkin,Scrivs, anyone else that want to come to the playground with their baseball bats can. I don’t have a problem with shit talkers. In fact it motivates me more. The problem I have is with Gothamist not paying their writers. Seriosly Jake why do you exploit them so?
Our name sucks. Dude, seriously get a life. IST network. oooh nice name do you guys also promote products made by 5 year olds in singapore. Probably cuz that’s your methodology. The Walmart of the Internet. Find Jake you can keep that title. Im just fine with it.
In a year we will still be here, oh yeah Im moving to New York so if you want we can meet up for drinks in Soho and handle this like men. Do you play chess?

As I said on PSFK’s site I never said anything about Erati or Gothamist and prefer to sit this fight out. Call me up when the next round starts.
And Cowboy, we’ve been bootstrapping since ‘05, that’s just how we do.
