Measuring Suck: Cory Doctorow Edition

Every once in awhile, an ubergeek comes along and combines programming know-how with the world’s biggest blog and its massive archive of Creative Commons-friendly content to give us BoingBoing mashup zen. Andy Baio’s detailed Five years of BoingBoing reporting and the Greasemonkey script to de-Xeni BoingBoing immediately come to mind.

Today, Joey Nelson delivers the latest in BB mashups. The site’s own About page sums it up quite succinctly:

Cory Sucks is an index of Cory Doctorow’s posts to Boing Boing ranked according to how much they suck.

In this case, ’suck’ is quantified by instances of DRM, book signings/appearance announcements, Disney, and anything else that Mr. Nelson deems sucky. Each keyword is also weighted based on its overall suck factor. With his suck ratios in place, Mr. Nelson has searched the entire backlog of Doctorow’s 14,000+ posts and ranked the Top 40 All Time suckiest. Judging by the Top 3, Joey might be on to something:

Cory quit his day-job (1834)
Jason Kottke reads my DRM talk (1672)
Katamari/Sony DRM mashup (1464)

Before the legions of Doctorites show up at someone’s door disgruntled — Nelson doesn’t actually think Cory Doctorow sucks (just a lot of his posts), and Blogebrity has no shortage of geeklove for Herr Doctorow. But (a) we’ve been fans of remixing web content since our birth, and (b) we’ve made no secret of our feelings on the DRM crusade.
